Do you feel like doing nothing because you lack energy? Are you lacking the motivation to do anything with loved ones or colleagues?

So many of us are feeling this way and sharing with others the mystery and frustrations of nothingness.

Recently when I have been gathering with friends, the common topic is how motivation is at an all-time low.

Are you coming up with reasons for why this “nothingness” might be happening? (It’s summer, it’s hot, it’s COVID, it’s the fried food you had for lunch)

If you find that you are coming up with reasons or excuses for your lack of energy and motivation, the reasons may be what is pulling you further away from dealing with long-term inaction and withdrawal from the deeper meaning of life and authentic connections.

Each reason inhibits your influence in the world to create powerful, much-needed change.

What To Do When You Feel Like Doing Nothing

Here are 5 things you should do when you feel like doing nothing. These steps will help bring your energy and productivity up… without searching for why it’s down.

1. Understand that the nature of the mind is to keep you safe.

The mind is uncomfortable with you “being” without “doing”, and desires to create all sorts of reasons for your lack of doing to protect self-worth and feelings of being “good enough”.

Your mind may even judge you for being lazy or lacking direction, focus, and motivation. Find peace in your mind and understand that the nature of your mind is to keep it safe.

2. Acknowledge the mind is highly addictive

We believe our mind’s thoughts so much that they become our “reality” every moment of the day. We are drawn in by this reality, but it is not healthy.

One thought can lead to hundreds of thoughts that lead us to experience emotion – like sadness, irritation, or frustration – and this cycle of thought to multiple thoughts to emotion occurs hundreds of times a day.

To break the cycle, acknowledge your addiction to your mind’s thoughts.

3. Be vigilant when “the craving” comes up

In this case, the craving to fall prey to our mind’s thoughts. Don’t let your thoughts take control. Don’t give into them.

Rather, when the thoughts come up that are connected to “doing nothing” – allow those thoughts to release and let them go.

Don’t hang on to the thought and add more thoughts, which suddenly create a story of your reality. Your thoughts are not your reality.

Your mind is a useful computer, but computers weren’t built to solve personal challenges and deep wounds of the past.

4. Once your mind stills through the above practice, receive your intuition

Here's What to Do When You Feel Like Doing Nothing

Your intuition is the guidance that wants to come through but can’t because you’re too busy being caught in the details of your mind’s story and your thoughts.

Guidance that is not forced, but rather comes through your stillness, will illuminate your next step.

You may need a rest, or you may be in a transition or cycle of change. You may need to release an old identity that no longer represents your journey.

Guidance leads by sourcing your original power that is not connected to your wounds and stories as your mind is.

5. Chant/verbalize a mantra

Do this as you find yourself resisting what needs to be done at the time it needs to be done.

My mantra is “do it without drama” – in other words, hear the words, feel the feelings, and then release them. Doing this daily supports us to deal with addiction to the personal mind.

These five steps are integral to change and can help motivate you when you feel like doing nothing. They will help to change your cycles of meaninglessness, tiredness, apathy, and a rollercoaster of emotions.
